If you would like to become an audio engineer, then there are a number of things you should take into consideration before enrolling into a college program. The important thing to remember is that audio engineering schools can be found online, which means that you can make most of the important considerations without ever having to leave the comfort of your sofa. But what are the things that you should look for when comparing your options?
Considerations before Enrolling in a Degree Program
Perhaps the most important thing that you have to do is look inwards, and determine what your personal learning style is. Audio engineering is both a theoretical and a practical field, and how schools deliver this varies tremendously. Some of the options include:
- A focus on the theoretical, with a heavy emphasis on classroom learning.
- A focus on the practical, with a heavy emphasis on practical learning, including an internship requirement.
- A focus on mentoring, whereby you learn by working alongside a professional who teaches you the ropes from their own experience.
None of the above three options are better than any of the others. However, only one of them will be best for you, and that all depends on how you like to learn. Think about this carefully, so that you don’t end up enrolling in a program that won’t enjoy. After all, most of us do not have the opportunity to go to school twice.
The next thing you have to consider is your geographical location. Again, there are multiple options available to you, although the two key ones are:
- To stay near where you are, so you remain in the community in which you are home.
- To leave your home town, or even your state, and experience a bit more of the country or the world.
Again, there are no right or wrong answers. It may simply not be possible for you to move away because of family commitments or because you don’t have the finances or the support network. Or perhaps your dream has always been to see the world, and you can’t wait to move away from home. But again, this is something only you will be able to decide. Since you are studying audio engineering, however, and at least some of your program should be practical, you may want to study in a city where the music industry is very vibrant.
Choosing a school is a big decision and there are many other things to take into consideration. However, we have a tendency to look at schools and then decide whether or not we like them. Instead, we should begin to look from the starting point of already knowing what we like, then determining whether or not the school meets those requirements. In so doing, you will have far more chance of ending up in a school where you will feel at home, setting yourself up for a fantastic career.
